Game Description

“Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge,” known as “Rockman World” in Japan, is an action-platformer video game developed and published by Capcom. Released for the Nintendo Game Boy in 1991, it is the first entry in the “Mega Man” series to be developed for a handheld console.

The game is a portable adaptation of the original “Mega Man” game for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) released in 1987. “Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge” retains the core gameplay mechanics and elements of its NES counterpart but features unique levels, bosses, and challenges tailored to the limitations and capabilities of the Game Boy hardware.

In “Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge,” players control the titular character, Mega Man, as he battles against six Robot Masters—Cut Man, Elec Man, Ice Man, Fire Man, Bomb Man, and Guts Man. These Robot Masters have been reimagined with new level designs and challenges for the handheld experience.

The game follows the classic “Mega Man” formula, where players can choose the order in which they tackle the Robot Master stages. Each stage is filled with platforming challenges, enemies, and traps, culminating in a boss battle against the respective Robot Master. Upon defeating a Robot Master, Mega Man gains their weapon, which can be used strategically against other Robot Masters.

After defeating the initial six Robot Masters, players progress to a new set of levels leading to a final showdown against the villainous Dr. Wily. This final confrontation features a series of challenging stages and intense boss battles that require players to utilize the acquired weapons and their platforming skills.

“Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge” received positive reviews for successfully translating the “Mega Man” experience to the Game Boy platform. While it offered a condensed version of the original NES game, it retained the challenging gameplay, iconic music, and overall feel that made the series popular.

The success of “Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge” on the Game Boy laid the foundation for subsequent handheld entries in the series, and it remains a noteworthy entry in the history of both the “Mega Man” franchise and handheld gaming in general.
