Game Description

Pitfall! is a classic platforming video game developed and published by Activision in 1982 for the Atari 2600 console. It was created by game designer David Crane, who had previously worked for Atari, and was one of the earliest and most successful titles released by Activision, which was founded by former Atari programmers looking to create and publish their own games.

The game’s objective is to guide the player character, Pitfall Harry, through a jungle environment in search of treasure, while avoiding obstacles and hazards such as pits, quicksand, alligators, snakes, and scorpions. Harry can run, jump, and climb on vines and poles, but must also collect various items along the way, such as treasure, silver bars, and diamond rings, to earn points and progress through the game’s levels.

Pitfall! was notable for its non-linear design, which allowed players to explore and backtrack through the game’s jungle environment in search of hidden items and alternative paths. It was also one of the first games to feature a continuous background soundtrack, as well as animated sequences and sound effects that were considered groundbreaking for their time.

The game was a commercial and critical success, selling over 4 million copies and receiving numerous awards and accolades. It spawned several sequels and spin-offs over the years, including Pitfall II: Lost Caverns, Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, and Pitfall 3D: Beyond the Jungle, as well as various remakes and re-releases for different platforms.
