The Pitfall video game franchise is a series of platforming games that was first released in 1982 by Activision. The original game was designed by David Crane, who is also known for his work on the Atari 2600 game, “Pitfall II: Lost Caverns”.
The first Pitfall game was a side-scrolling adventure game in which players controlled the protagonist, Pitfall Harry, as he navigated a jungle environment filled with hazards such as pits, alligators, snakes, and scorpions. The goal of the game was to collect treasures while avoiding danger and reaching the end of the level before time ran out.
The original game was a huge success, selling over 4 million copies and becoming one of the best-selling Atari 2600 games of all time. It spawned several sequels and spin-offs, including Pitfall II: Lost Caverns, Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, Pitfall 3D: Beyond the Jungle, and Pitfall: The Lost Expedition.
Over the years, the Pitfall franchise has been released on various platforms, including the Atari 2600, NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. The franchise has undergone numerous changes and adaptations to keep up with the evolving gaming landscape, but it remains a classic and influential series in the platforming genre.
