Game Description

Gyruss is a shoot ’em up arcade video game developed and published by Konami in 1983. The game features a mix of traditional space shooter gameplay with a unique, circular playing field and a classical music soundtrack.

In the game, players control a spaceship that moves along the edge of a circular tube, shooting at enemy ships and dodging obstacles. At the end of each level, players must fight a boss battle. The game has a unique feature in which it is possible to warp from one level to another by entering a special code during gameplay.

Gyruss was developed by a small team at Konami, including Yoshiki Okamoto, who had previously worked on the popular arcade game Time Pilot. The game was a critical and commercial success, with many reviewers praising its innovative gameplay and soundtrack. It was later ported to a variety of home consoles and computer platforms, including the NES, Atari 2600, and Commodore 64.

Gyruss is often cited as an influential game in the shoot ’em up genre, with its unique gameplay and circular playing field inspiring many later games in the genre. The game has also been referenced in popular culture, including the film WarGames and the television show Stranger Things.
