Dragon’s Lair is an interactive video game franchise that was first released in arcades in 1983. The game was created by animator Don Bluth and programmer Rick Dyer, and it is notable for its use of hand-drawn animation, which was unusual for video games at the time.
In the game, players control the knight Dirk the Daring as he navigates a series of obstacles and battles various enemies in order to rescue Princess Daphne from the evil dragon Singe. The game is played by watching a short animated sequence, and then pressing the appropriate button or moving the joystick in the correct direction to trigger the next part of the animation.
Dragon’s Lair was a huge success in arcades and was subsequently ported to a variety of home video game consoles and computer systems, including the Commodore 64, the Atari ST, and the Nintendo Entertainment System. The game’s success also spawned a sequel, Dragon’s Lair II: Time Warp, as well as several spin-off games and adaptations.
Dragon’s Lair is considered a classic and influential game, both for its innovative use of animation and for its impact on the arcade industry. It has been re-released on a variety of platforms over the years, including modern consoles and mobile devices.
