Game Description

Elite is a space exploration, trading, and combat simulator video game developed by David Braben and Ian Bell and released in 1984 for the BBC Micro and Acorn Electron computers. It was later ported to other platforms, including the Commodore 64, Apple II, and IBM PC.

In Elite, players take on the role of a space trader who begins with a small spacecraft and a small amount of money, and must explore the galaxy, trade goods between star systems, and engage in combat with pirates and other enemies. As the player earns more money, they can upgrade their ship and equipment, eventually becoming a powerful and influential figure in the game’s universe.

Elite was notable for its open-ended gameplay, allowing players to explore the galaxy and pursue their own goals without any set story or mission structure. It was also notable for its use of 3D wireframe graphics, which were groundbreaking for the time and allowed for a greater sense of immersion in the game’s universe.

Elite was a critical and commercial success, and is considered one of the most influential video games of all time. Its open-ended gameplay and 3D graphics helped to define the space exploration and trading simulator genre, and it has been cited as an inspiration for numerous other games, including the popular space simulators Wing Commander and Freelancer. Elite has been re-released and updated for modern platforms, and a sequel, Elite Dangerous, was released in 2014.
