The Kessen game franchise is a series of historical real-time strategy games developed by Japanese game developer Koei. The franchise consists of three main titles, Kessen, Kessen II, and Kessen III, as well as a spin-off game called Samurai Warriors: Katana.
The first game in the series, Kessen, was released in 2000 for the PlayStation 2. Set during the Sengoku period of Japanese history, Kessen allows players to take control of a warlord and command their armies in real-time battles. The game was praised for its graphics, cinematic cutscenes, and deep strategy gameplay.
Kessen II was released in 2001 for the PlayStation 2 and expanded on the gameplay of the first game, adding new units, tactics, and battle mechanics. The game was set during the Mongol invasions of Japan and featured battles between Japanese samurai and Mongol armies.
Kessen III was released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2 and marked a departure from the previous games in the series. The game was set during the late 16th century and allowed players to take control of a Japanese warlord during the Warring States period. Kessen III featured improved graphics and AI, as well as new gameplay mechanics like naval battles.
The Kessen series is known for its cinematic presentation, historical accuracy, and deep strategy gameplay. Despite critical acclaim, the series has not seen a new installment since Kessen III.
