Released in 2005 in Japan and 2006 in other regions for the PlayStation 2, the game is the first entry in the “Yakuza” series and introduces players to the gritty and dramatic world of organized crime in Japan.

Set in the fictional district of Kamurocho, a representation of Tokyo’s red-light district Kabukicho, “Yakuza” follows the story of Kazuma Kiryu, a former yakuza member who becomes embroiled in a complex web of crime and betrayal. When Kiryu’s childhood friend is accused of murder, he returns to the criminal underworld to uncover the truth and protect those he cares about.

Gameplay in “Yakuza” is a blend of exploration, combat, and storytelling. Players navigate the city streets, engaging in both main story missions and various side activities. These activities range from playing arcade games, visiting hostess clubs, engaging in underground gambling, and more. The game’s open-world setting allows players to immerse themselves in the bustling urban environment and interact with NPCs.

The combat in “Yakuza” is a mix of hand-to-hand brawling and various fighting styles. Players can perform powerful combos, grab and throw enemies, and use objects from the environment as weapons. The game’s combat system is intuitive and engaging, allowing players to take on multiple opponents in intense battles.

The game’s narrative is presented in a cinematic style with a focus on character development, drama, and emotion. The story delves into themes of loyalty, honor, and the struggle between different yakuza factions. The characters are well-written and multi-dimensional, adding depth to the game’s storytelling.
