Game Description

Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness is a classic role-playing video game developed and published by Origin Systems in 1981. It is the first installment of the Ultima series, which became one of the most influential and popular RPG franchises of the 1980s and 1990s.

In Ultima I, players control a single character known as the “Stranger,” who is on a quest to defeat the evil wizard Mondain and his minions, who have plunged the world into darkness. The game features a top-down perspective and a tile-based movement system, and players must explore a vast world, collect treasure and equipment, and engage in battles with monsters and other enemies.

Ultima I was notable for its open-ended design and its emphasis on player choice, which would become defining features of the Ultima series as a whole. The game also introduced many of the RPG conventions that are now considered standard, such as experience points, character classes, and a richly detailed game world with its own history and mythology.

Ultima I was originally released for the Apple II, but was later ported to other platforms such as the Commodore 64 and MS-DOS. It was a commercial success and helped establish the Ultima series as a major force in the RPG genre. The game has been re-released and remastered several times over the years, and remains a beloved classic among RPG fans.
