Game Description

Temple of Apshai is a classic role-playing video game developed and published by Automated Simulations (later known as Epyx) in 1979 for various home computer platforms of the time, including the Apple II, TRS-80, and Commodore 64. The game was one of the first successful attempts at bringing the experience of tabletop Dungeons & Dragons-style gaming to computers.

In Temple of Apshai, players create a character and navigate a dungeon filled with traps, puzzles, and monsters. The game features turn-based combat and character development through the accumulation of experience points. It was notable for its detailed descriptions of the environment and monsters, as well as its realistic depiction of combat.

Temple of Apshai was a commercial success and spawned several sequels, including Upper Reaches of Apshai (1981) and Curse of Ra (1982). The game was also influential in popularizing the genre of computer role-playing games, paving the way for future classics such as Ultima and The Bard’s Tale.
