Game Description

“Summoner” is an action role-playing game (ARPG) developed by Volition and published by THQ. Released in 2000 for the PlayStation 2 and later for other platforms, the game is one of the early titles for the PlayStation 2 and is known for its engaging story, complex characters, and mix of real-time and turn-based combat.

In “Summoner,” players assume the role of Joseph, a young man with the ability to summon powerful creatures and use magic. The game’s story follows Joseph as he embarks on a journey to prevent an ancient evil from returning to the world. Along the way, he is joined by a group of companions, each with their own unique abilities and backstories.

Gameplay in “Summoner” combines real-time exploration and combat with turn-based elements. Players navigate various environments, engage in battles with enemies, and solve puzzles to progress through the story. The combat system allows players to switch between characters and issue commands in real-time while pausing to issue more strategic orders.

The game’s summoning mechanics are a key feature, allowing Joseph to call forth powerful creatures to aid him in battle. These summoned creatures have different abilities and playstyles, adding a layer of strategy to combat encounters.

“Summoner” also features an expansive world to explore, filled with towns, dungeons, and various NPCs to interact with. The story is presented through in-game cutscenes and dialogue sequences that help immerse players in the game’s fantasy setting.

The graphics of “Summoner” showcased the capabilities of the PlayStation 2 at the time, delivering detailed character models and environments that contributed to the game’s atmosphere.

While “Summoner” received praise for its story, character development, and innovative gameplay mechanics, some critics noted issues with the combat system and certain technical aspects. Nevertheless, it holds a place in gaming history as one of the early RPGs for the PlayStation 2 and remains a notable title for fans of the genre.
