Game Description

“Earthbound,” known as “Mother 2” in Japan, is a role-playing video game developed by APE Inc. and HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo. It was originally released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1994 in Japan and 1995 in North America. The game was directed by Shigesato Itoi and is the second installment in the “Mother” series.

In “Earthbound,” players take on the role of a young boy named Ness, who embarks on a quirky and whimsical adventure to save the world from an alien invasion. Along the way, Ness is joined by three other party members: Paula, Jeff, and Poo. Together, they use their psychic abilities and unique strengths to battle bizarre enemies, solve puzzles, and uncover the truth behind the strange occurrences in their world.

The game is set in a modern-day, suburban setting, which was a departure from the traditional fantasy or medieval settings commonly seen in RPGs. This modern setting, combined with the game’s humor and offbeat characters, creates a distinct and charming atmosphere that has endeared “Earthbound” to its fans.

The combat system in “Earthbound” uses a turn-based approach, but with a unique twist. Players can see the enemies on the screen and avoid battles if they choose to do so. Additionally, the game features a rolling HP (hit points) meter during battles, allowing players to heal their characters before they succumb to damage, adding an extra layer of strategy to the combat.

One of the most memorable aspects of “Earthbound” is its quirky and surreal storyline, which features elements of science fiction, comedy, and social commentary. The game is also renowned for its catchy soundtrack, composed by Hiroshi Kanazu, Keiichi Suzuki, and Hirokazu Tanaka.

Despite receiving positive reviews from critics, “Earthbound” initially had modest commercial success in North America. However, over the years, it has gained a dedicated and passionate fanbase, becoming a cult classic and one of the most beloved RPGs of all time.

The impact of “Earthbound” extends beyond its initial release, as it has influenced a generation of game developers and remains a source of inspiration for many modern indie RPGs. Its unique style and storytelling have secured its place as a cherished and timeless gem in the history of video games.
