The game featured improved graphics and gameplay mechanics over the first game, including a new ability to target specific enemy parts.

In addition to the two main games, the franchise also includes several spin-off titles, such as Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars, a turn-based strategy game released for the Game Boy Advance in 2001, and Zone of the Enders HD Collection, a remastered collection of the first two games released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012.
