The Yakuza video game franchise is a series of action-adventure games developed and published by Sega. The franchise is set in the fictional city of Kamurocho, which is based on Tokyo’s real-life red-light district of Kabukicho, and follows the story of Kazuma Kiryu, a former member of the Japanese mafia who gets pulled back into the criminal underworld after spending a decade in prison.
The first game in the series, Yakuza, was released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2 in Japan and North America, and later in Europe in 2006. It was followed by several sequels, prequels, and spin-off games, including Yakuza 2, Yakuza 3, Yakuza 4, Yakuza 5, Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, Yakuza 6, and the spin-off Judgment.
The Yakuza franchise is known for its cinematic storytelling, immersive open-world environments, and deep character development. The games feature a mix of exploration, combat, and mini-games, such as karaoke, darts, and arcade games. The franchise also deals with mature themes, such as organized crime, honor, and loyalty.
The Yakuza series has received critical acclaim for its storytelling, characters, and gameplay, and has gained a dedicated fanbase. The franchise has sold over 14 million copies worldwide as of 2021 and has been credited with helping to popularize the open-world genre in Japan.
