The Wing Commander video game franchise is a series of space combat simulation games created by Chris Roberts and developed by Origin Systems (later acquired by Electronic Arts) in the 1990s. The franchise is known for its detailed storylines, cinematic cutscenes, and immersive gameplay.
The first game in the series, Wing Commander, was released in 1990 and was a critical and commercial success. It introduced players to the space-faring world of the Terran Confederation and its ongoing war against the alien Kilrathi. The game featured 3D graphics, fully-voiced characters, and a branching storyline with multiple endings.
Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi was released in 1991 and continued the story of the first game, with the player character serving as a pilot on a new starship. The game introduced new ships, weapons, and enemies, and continued to push the boundaries of 3D graphics and sound.
The series continued with several sequels, spin-offs, and expansions, including Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger (1994), Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom (1996), Wing Commander: Prophecy (1997), and Wing Commander: Secret Ops (1998). The franchise also spawned several novels, comics, and a feature film adaptation.
The Wing Commander franchise was known for its high production values, featuring celebrity voice actors such as Mark Hamill, John Rhys-Davies, and Malcolm McDowell, as well as groundbreaking visual effects and music. It also popularized the use of FMV (full-motion video) cutscenes in video games.
While the franchise has not seen a new release in many years, it remains a beloved classic of the space combat simulation genre, and has had a significant influence on the development of modern video games.
