The first game in the series, Thunder Force, was released for the Sharp X1 computer in 1983. The first console release, Thunder Force II, was released for the Sega Genesis in 1989. The game introduced a gameplay mechanic where players could switch between two different sets of weapons, adding a layer of strategy to the gameplay.

Thunder Force III was released in 1990 and expanded on the gameplay of its predecessors with larger levels and more powerful weapons. It also introduced a new spacecraft, the Styx, which had the ability to change its direction mid-flight.

Thunder Force IV, released in 1992, was a major milestone for the franchise, featuring some of the most advanced graphics and sound design for its time. It also featured a nonlinear level progression system, allowing players to choose which levels to complete in a specific order.

The franchise continued with Thunder Force V, which was released in 1997 for the Sega Saturn and PlayStation. It introduced a new game engine that allowed for more advanced 3D graphics and introduced the RVR-01 Gauntlet, a transforming spacecraft that could change between two different forms.

Since then, the franchise has been dormant, with no new releases announced. However, the games have become popular among fans of the genre for their fast-paced gameplay, challenging difficulty, and iconic soundtracks.
