The Shin Megami Tensei video game franchise is a series of role-playing games developed and published by Atlus. The series is known for its dark themes, mature storytelling, and demon-summoning gameplay mechanics.
The first game in the series, Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei, was released for the Famicom (Japanese version of the NES) in 1987. The game followed a high school student who discovers a computer program that allows him to summon and control demons, and was inspired by a series of novels by Aya Nishitani. The game was not released outside of Japan.
The series gained more widespread recognition with the release of Shin Megami Tensei on the Super Famicom in 1992. The game featured a post-apocalyptic Tokyo and allowed players to negotiate with and recruit demons to fight alongside them. It was praised for its mature storytelling and innovative gameplay mechanics.
Subsequent games in the series included Shin Megami Tensei II, which expanded on the demon negotiation mechanics and introduced a branching storyline; Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, which introduced a third-person perspective and a more open-ended storyline; and Shin Megami Tensei IV, which introduced a new setting and story while retaining the demon-summoning mechanics.
The series has also spawned several spin-off games, including the Persona series, which features a high school setting and focuses on building relationships with characters to gain new abilities; and the Devil Survivor series, which combines tactical RPG gameplay with demon summoning.
The most recent game in the series, Shin Megami Tensei V, was released in 2021 for the Nintendo Switch. It features a new setting and storyline, as well as updated demon-summoning mechanics and graphics.
Overall, the Shin Megami Tensei franchise has been praised for its mature storytelling, innovative gameplay mechanics, and unique demon-summoning system. It has also gained a devoted following among RPG fans for its challenging difficulty and dark themes.
