The Shenmue game franchise is a series of action-adventure games developed by Yu Suzuki and his team at Sega-AM2, and published by Sega. The franchise consists of two main games, Shenmue (1999) and Shenmue II (2001), as well as a spin-off game, Shenmue Online (2004), which was only released in Asia.
Shenmue is set in Yokosuka, Japan in 1986, and follows the story of Ryo Hazuki, a young martial artist seeking revenge against Lan Di, a Chinese crime lord who murdered Ryo’s father. The game features an open-world environment, and players must explore the town of Yokosuka, talk to characters, and engage in battles to progress the story.
Shenmue II continues the story in Hong Kong, and features an even larger open-world environment with new characters and gameplay mechanics. The game also introduces quick-time events and branching story paths, allowing players to make choices that affect the outcome of the game.
Despite critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase, the Shenmue franchise struggled commercially and was not able to recoup its high development costs. The third game in the series, Shenmue III, was released in 2019 after a successful crowdfunding campaign, but received mixed reviews and faced criticism for its outdated gameplay mechanics. Nevertheless, the Shenmue franchise remains a significant cultural touchstone in the history of video games, particularly for its pioneering use of open-world game design and cinematic storytelling techniques.
