The Persona video game franchise is a series of Japanese role-playing games developed by Atlus. The first game in the series, Revelations: Persona, was released in 1996 for the PlayStation. The Persona games are known for their unique blend of traditional turn-based combat, social simulation elements, and a focus on character development and storytelling.
The series takes place in modern-day Japan and typically follows a group of high school students who discover that they have the ability to summon Personas, physical manifestations of their inner selves that allow them to fight supernatural enemies. The series explores themes such as identity, psychology, and the human psyche, often delving into dark and mature subject matter.
Since its debut, the Persona series has garnered a dedicated fanbase and critical acclaim, with many of its games receiving high scores and awards. The series has also expanded beyond the mainline games, with spin-offs and adaptations including Persona 4 Arena, Persona 5: The Animation, and a live-action television series.
