The MechWarrior video game franchise is a series of games that focuses on piloting giant, armored robots known as “BattleMechs” in futuristic warfare. The franchise was developed by FASA Corporation and first launched in 1989 with the release of the original MechWarrior game for DOS.
The game is set in a fictional universe where humanity has colonized the stars and is now divided into warring factions. Players take on the role of MechWarriors, highly skilled pilots who operate the BattleMechs in battles against enemy forces. The games combine elements of simulation and action gameplay, requiring players to manage their resources and weapons while engaging in intense combat.
MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat, released in 1995, was a major breakthrough for the franchise, featuring improved graphics, sound, and gameplay. It was followed by several expansions and sequels, including MechWarrior 3 (1999), MechWarrior 4: Vengeance (2000), and MechWarrior Online (2013), which introduced online multiplayer gameplay.
In addition to the video games, the MechWarrior franchise has also inspired several spin-off products, including novels, tabletop games, and even a television series. The franchise is currently owned by Catalyst Game Labs, who acquired the rights from Microsoft in 2007.
