Last Updated on: September 2nd, 2021
The FlatOut video game franchise is a series of racing and destruction derby games developed by Bugbear Entertainment and published by Empire Interactive and Strategy First. The franchise started with the release of the first game, FlatOut, in 2004 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC.
The gameplay of the FlatOut games centers around racing, but also includes destructive elements such as smashing other cars and objects on the track. The games feature a physics engine that allows for realistic damage to the cars, and players can earn points by causing the most destruction.
The first two games, FlatOut and FlatOut 2, were well-received by critics and fans alike, with particular praise for the destruction derby elements and physics engine. The third game, FlatOut 3: Chaos & Destruction, was developed by a different studio and received negative reviews due to technical issues and a lack of polish.
In 2016, the franchise was revived with the release of FlatOut 4: Total Insanity, developed by Kylotonn and published by Bigben Interactive. The game received mixed reviews, with criticism for its lack of innovation and reliance on old gameplay mechanics.
