The Fear Effect game franchise is a series of survival horror video games developed by Kronos Digital Entertainment and published by Eidos Interactive. The franchise currently consists of three games: Fear Effect, Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix, and Fear Effect Sedna.
The first game in the series, Fear Effect, was released for the PlayStation in 2000. It follows the story of three mercenaries – Hana Tsu-Vachel, Royce Glas, and Jakob “Deke” Decourt – as they are hired to retrieve the kidnapped daughter of a powerful Hong Kong triad boss. The game was praised for its cinematic presentation and unique cel-shaded graphics, which were considered groundbreaking for the time.
The sequel, Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix, was released in 2001 for the PlayStation. It serves as a prequel to the first game and follows the same three protagonists as they embark on a mission to rescue Hana’s father from a mysterious corporation. The game introduced new gameplay mechanics, such as multiple playable characters and a branching storyline, and continued the franchise’s signature style of combining survival horror gameplay with cinematic storytelling.
After a long hiatus, the Fear Effect franchise was revived in 2018 with the release of Fear Effect Sedna for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The game takes place after the events of the first two games and follows Hana and her team as they investigate a mysterious artifact known as the Heart of Chaos. Fear Effect Sedna was developed by Sushee, a French indie studio, and features a new isometric perspective and real-time tactical gameplay, while still retaining the franchise’s cinematic style and cel-shaded graphics.
