The Duke Nukem video game franchise is a long-running series of first-person shooter games, featuring the titular character Duke Nukem. The series began with the release of the first game, Duke Nukem, in 1991. Developed by Apogee Software and released for MS-DOS, the game was a side-scrolling platformer that became popular due to its use of humor and pop culture references.
In 1996, Duke Nukem 3D was released, which shifted the series to a first-person shooter format and introduced many of the elements that would become synonymous with the franchise, such as the character’s catchphrases and his affinity for strippers. The game was a critical and commercial success, and spawned numerous expansions and spin-offs.
Despite the success of Duke Nukem 3D, the franchise’s development was plagued by a series of delays and cancellations, with Duke Nukem Forever becoming one of the most infamous examples of development hell in the video game industry. The game was in development for over a decade, and underwent multiple engine changes and development team turnovers before being released in 2011 to largely negative reviews.
