The Drakengard game franchise is a series of action role-playing games developed by Japanese video game developer, Access Games (formerly known as Cavia) and published by Square Enix. The series consists of three main games and one spin-off game, with the first game releasing in 2003 for the PlayStation 2.
The games are set in a fantasy world where humans, dragons, and other magical creatures coexist. The gameplay of the series is a mix of ground-based hack-and-slash combat and aerial battles on the back of dragons.
The first game in the series, titled “Drakengard” in Japan and “Drag-On Dragoon” in other regions, follows the story of a young man named Caim, who sets out to rescue his sister Furiae from the clutches of the evil Empire. Along the way, he forms a pact with a dragon, who becomes his companion in battle.
The second game, “Drakengard 2,” features a new protagonist named Nowe, who is on a quest to stop a group of rebels who are trying to revive the evil goddess, Furiae.
The third game, “Drakengard 3,” is a prequel set before the events of the first game and tells the story of Zero, a woman who sets out to kill her sisters, who are the rulers of the world.
The spin-off game, “Nier,” takes place in the same world as Drakengard, but in a different time period and with different characters. The game was a critical and commercial success, leading to its own spin-off series.
Overall, the Drakengard series has a reputation for its dark and mature themes, unconventional storytelling, and unique blend of genres.
